My great-grandmother made sweet fern tea for my poison ivy when I was ten. My grandmother ate dandelion salad she gathered in the spring. My mother kept a little bottle of Lee's Save the Baby, an herbal chest rub from 1874 that's long since disappeared from shelves, for every cough and sniffle my sister and I came down with when we were kids.

Natural remedies weren't a trend in our family. They were just what you did.
